Dolphin Quantum Review
Thanks for stopping by to check out our Dolphin Quantum Robotic Pool Cleaner Review.
The first thing that’ll strike you about this in-ground pool cleaner is its 4 digit price tag. At this price, buyer expectations are somewhat ludicrously high. It won’t be surprising if some customers expect it to do the dishes and even file their income tax returns!
To it’s credit, the Dolphin Quantum does have impressive specifications and features.
For example: It’s rubber tracks make it look like a tank that is ready to take on any terrain.
It also has the largest cartridge filter among pool cleaners. But do all these numbers translate into real-world practicality and efficiency?
At the end of the day, only one thing matters – does it leave the swimming pool in immaculate condition? Let us delve a bit deeper to find out.
The Dolphin Quantum by Maytronics is a highly advanced offering – it’s a premium robotic pool cleaner for in-ground swimming pools.
Swimming pool maintenance can be a cumbersome affair; despite having a pool cleaner, you still may have to get down and dirty once in a while. That’s because some pool cleaners tend to be whimsical! They leave out certain areas of the pool and you then have to scrub them manually while holding your breathe under water! Not fun.
This is where the advanced navigation system and vociferous brushing abilities of the Dolphin Quantum come into play. It scans the pool and creates an efficient route, covering all bits including corners, the floor and the walls, yes...even the walls. This pool cleaner climbs walls with the skill and dexterity of a ninja assassin. It scrubs them more fiercely than your mom on ‘home cleaning weekend’. (Just kidding, nothing scrubs the walls more fiercely than moms on cleaning weekends!)
To cut it short, the Dolphin Quantum is a phenomenal robotic pool cleaner and despite a shocker of a price tag, it sort of makes sense as the operating costs are ludicrously low at just 5 cents an hour! That’s way better than your traditional pump and suction pool cleaners which aren’t just useless at climbing walls, but also require additional lines and what not...
Dolphin Quantum Features:
PowerJet 3D Mobility: The quality of cleaning of bot largely depends upon it’s ability to maneuver itself in tight spots, along walls and in other tricky areas of the pool. To help with mobility, the Quantum is equipped with PowerJet 3D technology. There are vortex jets located at the top and sides of the cleaner. Hence, even though the Quantum is not exactly super-light at 27 pounds, it can maneuver and hover with the precision of a combat helicopter. The jets provide the necessary thrust to propel the bot up on vertical surfaces and around other obstacles. This enables the Quantum to provide complete coverage, even in pools that are not exactly conventionally shaped.
While most robotic pool cleaners can only go forwards or backwards, the PowerJet 3D mobility system ensures that this bot can go virtually in any direction. What a genius idea! The precise delivery of power makes the Quantum more accurate so that it can get rid of every bit of dirt and debris from all parts of the pool – including the walls and the tile line.
Continuous Rubber Tracks: We all know that despite having a really powerful and reliable engine, a car is only as good as its tires! That’s the real business end of a vehicle – it’s the only part of the machinery that actually comes in contact with the ground. The engine, transmission and everything else is quite futile if the tires are not up to the mark. The exact same idea holds true for robotic pool cleaners as well – even with the best motor, the bot is only effective if it can maintain enough traction for the brushes to do their job!
Thankfully, the Quantum is equipped with tank-like continuous rubber tracks that provide sufficient traction even on slopes and walls. It’s quite obvious that pool surfaces are extremely slippery and hence, the heavy duty rubber tracks come in quite handy to maintain the necessary amount of grip required to deliver a deep and thorough cleaning.
HyberBrush Dual Cleaning: We have been reviewing robotic pool cleaners for quite some time now and after examining just about every model on the market that deserves attention, we’ve come to the conclusion that in the pool cleaning world – manufacturers are not shy about throwing in words and prefixes such as uber, hyper, super etc. Understandably, we take those descriptions with a big pinch of salt. Usually, they mean abso-freakin’-lutely nothing! So when we learnt about the Quantum’s Hyper-brushing capabilities, we sort of rolled our eyes a little bit. But...and it’s a big but...this bot actually delivers what it says – imagine our surprise when we found out that the brushes actually roll twice as fast as those in most other bots!
No matter how stubborn the dirt in your pool is...the Quantum will take care of it! We we saw the brushes operating, we were reminded of a fercious Tasmanian Devil or a honey badger. They really mean business and the no-nonsense attitude is really impressive.
SmartNav 2.0: The Quantum would not been such a joy to use if it weren’t for the state-of-the-art navigation system, which Dolphin has aptly called ‘SmartNav 2.0’. This smart system scans the entire the pool and comes up with the most efficient route to ensure a comprehensive clean.
While most bots get stuck at even minor obstacles, the Quantum can recognise obstacles and knows how to work it’s way around them. An advanced navigation system, hyperactive brushes, auxiliary power jets and a continuous set of rubber tracks make a very potent combination...but hey, there’s more!
Filtration System: Firstly, the filters are top loading and this means that they’re easy to access, clean and install again. Nobody wants to wrestle with a 27 pound piece of equipment to get the cartridges out. Secondly, with an area of 400 square inches, Dolphin claims that this is the largest filter to be ever used in a robotic pool cleaner.
The extra-large size means that the filter needs to be cleaned less often. Also, the four sides snap apart quickly and easily for convenient cleaning. Or if you prefer, the bottom can be removed to just let the debris fall out.
The interchangeable microns are suitable for all kinds of dirt and debris – they trap everything from big leaves to fine dirt and even algae. The Quantum has one job, to ensure that the pool is spotless and it leaves no stone unturned in executing it.
Program and Forget: The bot can be scheduled to clean everyday, twice a week or thrice every week. The frequency can be adjusted according to the usage and how dirty the pool gets (this depends on the environment and other factors). The average cycle is 2 hours but there are various settings that allow you to tweak the bot for optimum performance.
- Super energy efficient. At just 5 cents an hour, there’s no room for any sort of criticism.
- Convenience redefined: No need for any external cables, just connect it to a power supply, put it in the water and you’re ready to go. No need to scrub the walls yourself with a long brush. The bot does all the dirty work while you get to enjoy a pristine pool.
- Maytronics/Dolphin peace of mind
- Climbs walls with ease
- Loaded with advanced technology to deliver a complete clean, each and every time.
- It's not exactly budget friendly (Check the price here)
- The bot is a bit on heavier side. It weighs a shade under 28 pounds. Others, like the Dolphin Triton are more than 10 pounds lighter in comparison
- Does not have Bluetooth connectivity. This is a bit disappointing, honestly. While some people feel that app connectivity is a bit gimmicky, many do enjoy the option of controlling the robot remotely as this gives them the option to spot clean. At this price, a pool cleaning robot is expected to come with all bells and whistles.
- Works only in in-ground pools that are up to 60 feet in length. Again, a bit more flexibility and versatility would have augmented the Quantum’s case.
Surprisingly, this particular model has too many negative customer reviews. The complaints are not performance related but rather, in most cases, the bot just stopped working after a few months.
Still, Dolphin is an established brand and we have to give them the benefit of the doubt this time, especially since the unit comes with a 2 year warranty period.
Review & Final Verdict:
Despite a few too many customer complaints, we think that the Dolphin Quantum makes a ‘quantum’ leap in terms of performance and efficiency.
Dolphin/Maytronics have been in business for almost 4 decades now and they know a thing or two about robotic pool cleaners.
You cannot get this far if your after-sales service is lackluster.
- So while we’re baffled by the negative feedback, based on our own research, the Quantum is one hell of a pool cleaner!
- You should give it a go...... but.... if you want to err on the side of caution – just go for your the Dolphin Nautilius Plus with your eyes closed. It’s our favorite pool cleaner and we reckon that you’ll love it too.
Final Score: 4/5
