Dolphin Mercury Review

My Review of the Dolphin Mercury Robotic Pool Cleaner

DOLPHIN MERCURY REVIEW

Robotic pool cleaners can, understandably, seem intimidating at first. They’re intelligent, almost sentient beings that seem like something out of a science fiction novel. One might almost feel threatened, like some underwater terminator just waiting to pounce on the next swimmer.

Intimidating as though they may be, the only thing these innovations terminate is the dirt and grime from your pool’s surface. They drastically cut down cleaning time, operate automatically, and save you hundreds of dollars in professional pool cleaning services. To put it plainly, robotic pool cleaners are an investment that pays dividends in the long run. Especially if we’re talking about a Dolphin pool cleaner.

With more than 35 years of cleaning residential swimming pools, Dolphins provide pool owners with a hassle-free cleaning solution of unmatched performance and longevity.

So far in this series, we’ve gone over quite a several Dolphin robotic pool cleaners. Now, we’re about to do it again with the Dolphin Mercury.

Why Listen to Me?

I've been in and around swimming pools since before I could walk!

  • As a kid, I spent the summers at my grandpa's in the pool for what seems like 6-8 hours a day.
  • As an adult, I've had my own pool since I first owned my house!
  • I've used & tested DOZENS of Robotic Pool Cleaners the past 25 years, I know what to look for, and am here to share my experience with you!

In this review we're going to cover:

  1. What makes this particular pool cleaner different from its cousins.
  2. Is it better or substandard?
  3. Do the specs and features warrant its price?

We’ll tackle all that and more in the review below!

Dolphin Mercury's More Notable Features

Let's dig in! 🙂

Bluetooth & Wi-Fi Capable

You know we’re living in some futuristic times when you can control a robot from anywhere in the world. That’s right, you can operate the Dolphin Mercury remotely from your smartphone.

All you have to do is sync up with the MyDolphin App to access features such as cleaning cycles, weekly scheduler, and navigation for spot cleaning.

This might be a little extra, but it’s an added layer of convenience that’s definitely hard to pass on. It also allows you more time to focus on other more fulfilling tasks as you program the machine to do what it does automatically.

Can Clean Pools Up To 50 ft. In Size

Depending on the size of your swimming pool, you would surely want a pool cleaner that can keep up.

Larger pools are fun but they also accumulate dirt and algae in hard-to-reach areas, needing extra attention when cleaning.

Luckily, the Dolphin Mercury can handle large pools, up to 50 feet in size to be exact. Although it might take longer for the machine to clean, it can provide an immaculately spotless pool in just a few hours.

Weekly Scheduling

The MyDolphin App comes with a host of cleaning schedules for you to choose from. This means you can set regular cleaning schedules that won’t get in the way of your swimming time.

On the MyDolphin App, you can also remotely steer the unit to spots of the pool you want it to give extra attention to.

Personally, this is my favorite feature.

Many robotic cleaners, though very intelligent, tend to miss certain spots of the pool and leave it unevenly cleaned. By being able to steer the Dolphin Mercury through your phone, you can take the extra step to ensure your pool is as clean as possible.

As long as the cleaner is plugged in and there’s still space in the filter for cleaning, you can just sit back and relax as this robotic vacuum cleaner scrubs your pool to spotless perfection.

Front High-Speed Scrubber with Standard Back Scrubber

Speaking of scrubbing action, the Dolphin Mercury sports rubber scrubbers both in the front and back.

This, along with suction, effectively dislodges dirt and grime from the surface of the pool and sucks it up to be stored in the filter.

By design, it also ensures no damage is done to the surface while cleaning, making the unit ideal for cleaning from gunite to tile and everything in between.

Single Click Basket - Extra Large

The extra-large filter basket serves two functions. Its main purpose is to filter out dirt, silt, and algae scrubbed off the surface of the pool.

The second, due to its larger than usual size, helps prevent you from constantly having to fish out the unit from the water to empty the filter.

So, the single-click basket of the Dolphin Mercury works both for your convenience and to ensure the best cleaning action possible.

Energy Efficient

Another important feature of the Dolphin Mercury is that it’s energy-efficient.

Even with its powerful motor that facilitates a suction rate of 4000 GPH, it only has an average operating cost of 5 cents per hour.

Installation for the unit is also very easy, practically straightforward. No extra equipment is needed to get the job done.

Simply plug it in, drop it in, and walk away and let the Mercury clean for you. It also comes with a 60 ft. long tangle-free cable.

2-Year Warranty

Finally, the unit comes with a 2-year warranty against defects in parts, workmanship, as well as to all plastic parts from the date of purchase. This is not something that you’re likely to need though since many reports use the Dolphin Mercury years after its purchase.

Pros & cons

Pros
  • Lots of Unique and Innovative Features. When we talk about premium features in a robotic pool cleaner, we’re usually referring to the features sported by models like the Dolphin Mercury. They are definitely above and beyond to give this little cleaner as many tricks as possible.
  • Powerful Cleaning Performance. When it comes to cleaning performance, the Dolphin Mercury raises the bar. 4000 GPH of suction works in unison with the scrubbers and filter to get your pool looking as good as new in as little time as possible.
  • Generally, Convenient To Have Overall. Energy-efficient, remotely controlled, works automatically, or can be steered using the app. These are just some of the things that make the Dolphin Mercury a worthy pool cleaning helper.
  • Lightweight and Easy To Use. At only 16.5 pounds, the Dolphin Mercury is one easy-to-carry machine. Whereas other models might weigh upwards of 25 pounds and be a beast to get in and out of the pool, the Dolphin Mercury can simply be dropped into the pool and operated with just a few taps on the app.
  • Competitively Prices Given Its Features. Premium-priced but still attainable when considering the amount of high-tech features you’re getting along with it. It’s attractively priced when considering the models of competing brands, with similar features, cost way more than what you would pay for this unit.
  • It Saves On Energy. Energy efficiency is of the utmost importance in this day and age. Both for the planet and your electric bill, all your appliances need to be effective with as little energy consumption as possible, like the Dolphin Mercury.
Cons
  • Relies on Bluetooth/Wi-Fi Connection. The main drawback that one could experience with a unit like this is that it relies heavily on a stable internet connection to operate. If your pool area is somewhere the Wi-Fi doesn't reach, then you might run into some problems.
  • Only Give Up To 2 Hours Of Cleaning At A Time. The maximum cleaning time you can set for this unit is 2 hours. Some pool owners, especially those with very large pools, might need a bit longer than that.
  • Might Be Too Much For Some. With all the glamor and fun this unit possesses, some might find it too much. If you’re looking for a simple pool cleaner and have no use for apps or the like, then this might prove to be too much too soon for you.

Review & Final Verdict: 4.1 out of 5

When it comes to giving the most bang for your buck, the Dolphin Mercury does not fall short. Indeed, it goes above and beyond to provide the customer with as much innovation as possible.

Even if we were to remove the Wi-Fi capabilities of the unit, it’s still a pretty robust and energy-efficient option that’s sure to serve as a good investment for you in the long run.

That being said, it might still be too futuristic for some. If you’re looking for something uncomplicated and familiar, the Dolphin Mercury might be too robotic for its own good.

Personally though, one should embrace innovation with open arms.

There’s no denying that the brightest minds went into the making of this machine and it would be a shame not to experience its fullest potential.

Whether you like robots or not, the Dolphin Mercury is definitely a recommended for purchase!
